    Difference between EPS and XPS polystyrene boards

    Expanded polystyrene (EPS) is the classic white foam with visible beads, available in thicknesses from 2 to 30 cm and ideal for facade insulation. Extruded polystyrene (XPS) like STIRODUR XPS 3CM 1250X600mm ( 0.75m2 ) has a closed-cell structure in color and provides superior moisture resistance – essential for insulating foundation walls, terraces and flat roofs.

    Density and thickness – how to choose

    For facade insulation, standard density is 15-20 kg/m³ with thickness of 10-15 cm for optimal thermal protection. Products like STIRODUR 5CM 1250X600MM (0.75M2) with greater thickness significantly reduce heat loss. For interior sound insulation of partition walls, 5 cm thickness with 25 kg/m³ density is often sufficient.

    Adhesion and mounting polystyrene boards

    Quality adhesive such as LEPAK ZA STIROPOR CT-84 POLIURETANSKI 850ml from Ceresit brand ensures permanent bond with substrate and allows quick subsequent processing. Polyurethane spray adhesives are faster for installation but require a level surface. Ceresit and Dikem offer complete systems of adhesives and reinforcing mortars for professional facade insulation.

    Application of polystyrene boards in different conditions

    Classic white polystyrene is an economical choice for dry interior and exterior surfaces with adequate moisture protection. For underground parts of buildings, terraces and flat roofs, XPS polystyrene is necessary due to complete resistance to water vapor diffusion. Tritonex and other brands offer specialized boards for floor insulation under screed.

    Thermal conductivity coefficient

    Lambda value (λ) of 0.035-0.040 W/mK is standard for quality polystyrene. Lower value means better insulation – for the same thermal protection, thinner board can be used. Extruded polystyrene has lambda around 0.030 W/mK, making it more efficient for limited space where every centimeter of thickness matters.
