Mills, Presses & Crushers – Guide to Fruit and Grain Processing

Grape crushers – foundation of winemaking

A crusher breaks grape berries without crushing the seeds, which is crucial for must quality. Muljača za grožđe- sa elektromotorom enables fast and efficient processing of large quantities without physical strain. Electric models are more practical than manual ones, especially if you process over 100 kg of grapes annually.

    Capacity and motor power

For hobby winemaking, a 300-500W crusher that processes 200-400 kg/h is sufficient. Professional producers choose models over 750W with stainless steel rollers that can run continuously for hours. Grifo offers robust models suitable even for intensive use during harvest season.

    Materials and maintenance

Stainless steel rollers (inox 304) are standard because they don't oxidize or alter the taste of must. Plastic parts must be food-grade, BPA-free. After each use, thoroughly rinse the rollers and open the chambers to dry – residual sugars attract insects and can cause fermentation.

Fruit and grape presses – efficient juice extraction

A good press extracts 65-75% juice from soft fruit or grapes without excessive pressure that would extract bitterness from seeds. Hydraulic presses enable controlled, gradual compression. Manual screw presses are cheaper but require more effort and time.

    Basket and filtration

Wooden baskets made of beech or oak provide natural filtration and last decades with proper care. Stainless steel baskets with perforated plates are easier to maintain and don't absorb odors. Basket capacity should match one crushing batch – typically between 15 and 50 liters.

Grain mills – fresh flour in home kitchen

Home mills with stone burrs grind wheat, corn, rye and other grains into completely fresh flour without additives. Electric models work quickly and quietly, with adjustable fineness settings. For regular use, choose a mill with at least 400W power and grind level adjustment.

    Stone vs steel burrs

Stone burrs (usually corundum or basalt) grind slowly and don't heat the flour, preserving enzymes and vitamins. Steel burrs work faster but generate more heat. For cold grinding of whole grain for bread and dough, stone mills are the better choice – they oxidize fatty acids from the germ less.
