Waterproofing – How to Protect Structures from Moisture Intrusion

    Types of waterproofing materials

Bitumen coatings like BITULIN 10L are the most popular choice for foundations thanks to easy application and excellent adhesion to concrete. Bitumen tapes such as BITULIT 9/1- 9KG provide an additional layer of protection in critical areas where water pressure is high. Membranes like FOLIJA ZA TEMELJ 2,0X20M/12 (rolna 40m2) KRONFLEX:) are used as underlayment or standalone protection for less exposed surfaces.

Bitumen coatings – fast and reliable application

Cold-applied bitumen coatings from Ceresit and Beohemik are applied with brush or roller directly onto prepared substrate without heating. Hot-applied bitumen coatings require heating but provide a thicker protective layer in demanding conditions. Dikem products are known for excellent elasticity which prevents cracking during thermal expansion.

    Waterproofing membranes and films

Polyethylene films with 0.2-0.3 mm thickness are used beneath foundation slabs as a capillary moisture barrier. PVC membranes from Čar and Interalis offer greater mechanical resistance and are used on terraces and flat roofs. Membranes are joined by heat welding or adhesive, and overlapping seams must be at least 10 cm wide.

Surface preparation – the key to successful waterproofing

The substrate must be clean, dry and free of oils – remove dust, laitance and concrete residues. Fill cavities and cracks with cement mortar or epoxy compound at least 24 hours before applying waterproofing. Kronmat outlets often carry primers that improve waterproofing adhesion to concrete.

Number of layers and protection thickness

Foundations below ground level must be protected with at least two coats of bitumen coating with a total thickness of 3-4 mm. Terraces and flat roofs require a three-layer system: primer, two coating layers and a finishing membrane or tape. In cases of high groundwater levels, consult a structural engineer for additional reinforcement.

    Common mistakes to avoid

Never apply waterproofing to a damp surface – moisture prevents adhesion and later leads to delamination and water breakthrough. Do not skip the priming layer on porous surfaces as it increases absorption and weakens protection. Always install membranes from Izolirka and other brands with a 15-20 cm overlap and seal joints with bitumen adhesive.
