Understanding the grit system

Grit (GR or GRIT) indicates the size of abrasive particles – lower numbers mean coarser grain for faster material removal, higher numbers finer finish. GR40 is used for heavy paint or rust removal, GR80-120 for basic wood sanding, while GR180-240 provides smooth surfaces before varnishing. Polished final finishes require grits above GR400.

The most common mistake is attempting to use too coarse a grit for final finishing – scratches from GR40 or GR60 are difficult to remove and require multiple passes with finer papers. Always progress gradually through grits (e.g. 80-120-180-240) for professional results. Also verify whether your random orbital sander requires discs with 6 or 8 dust extraction holes.

Durability and storage

Quality sandpaper from Bosch or Einhell retains abrasive properties for years when stored in dry conditions. Moisture deteriorates the adhesive holding the grains which reduces sanding efficiency.
